An Overview of the History of Western Astrology
**as presented by astrologer Chris Brennan (date ranges are approximate)
Mesopotamian Astrology [2000BC-100BC] – Focus on Basic Mundane Astrology which then develops further into the 12 Sign System and we see the use of certain Aspects
Egyptian Astrology [2000BC-100BC] – Focus on simplistic Mundane Astrology utilizing Decans and Fixed Stars
Hellensistic Astrology [100BC-600AD] – The 4 Fold System of Astrology is developed and around the 1st or 2nd Century AD the decision is made (by astrologers themselves) to detach the Zodiac from the Constellations in order to counteract the effects of Precession
~100AD some form of contact is made with the Indian subcontinent and a merging of Hellenistic astrological techniques with the pre-existing forms of Indian Astrology result in modern Indian(Vedic/Jyotish) Astrology which continues in an unbroken line to the modern era
Medieval Astrology [700AD-1200AD]
Phase 1: Persian Astrology [700AD-1000AD] – Persian Astrologers salvage what is left of Hellenistic Astrology following the Fall of the Roman Empire, translate it into Arabic, and over the years develop it further
Phase 2: Latin Revival [1000AD-1200AD] – Translation of Arabic works into Latin begins to occur in the Iberian Peninsula, astrology is re-introduced to the Europeans, and by the 13th Century Medical Astrology is common practice
“Renaissance” Astrology [1300AD-1600AD] – The advent of the printing press allows astrological knowledge to proliferate throughout Europe, but with the rise of the Age of Enlightenment and its focus on the scientific method and reductionism astrology is shunned and eventually dies out in the western world
Modern Astrology [Late 1800’s-2000AD] – The discovery of the outer planets ushers in a new interest in astrology, and the work of occultists and theosophists revive the tradition in mass consciousness. During this era “Sun Sign” astrology is born and we see the advent of “Newspaper Horoscopes”
Post-Modern (Revivalist) Astrology [1980AD-Current Day] – Proliferation of depth-psychology, experimentation with new techniques, and the revival of ancient astrological traditions usher in a new era of astrological enlightenment. The rise of mergers of eastern and western traditions, as well as ancient and modern techniques is seen
